Painting white and black dogs is definitely a challenge. In actuality, there is so much color in them and very little white or black. It's always tempting to paint what I think I see instead of what I really see. Not only that, but it doesn't help that I love white paint! I buy it in large tubes and the consistency is so buttery, I just want to mix it in everything... this is becoming a bit of a problem.
An exercise I've done in class is to not use any black or white at all, which forces you to find other colors for the darkest and lightest values. I may just have to go back to that idea with the next painting... I'll have to make sure it's a brown dog though :)
